Western WA Spring Turkey
We scouted this area pretty hard in preparation for the Spring Turkey opener. We missed the birds the first day, but were more prepared the second day of the season. Brian and I got out early and set up on the top of a ridgeline. Brian began to call using his mouth call, but we heard no response. He then broke out the slate and made a few quick calls. To our surprise the birds were about 20 yards directly behind us. We did not expect this – turning around was tricky and the lone Tom saw us. Luckily Brian was able to keep on communicating with one of the Hens with the slate call and keep them close. As the Tom strutted over into plain view we were able to take him down.
